THE MISSISSAUGA NEWS Classic rock returns as The Circus Leaves Town
The Mississauga News Apr 7, 2004
Uninspired by the current onslaught of pop punk bands being touted as the next big thing, Brampton quartet And The Circus Leaves Town returned to the days of bell bottoms and peace signs to find inspiration. Well, maybe not that far back. But pretty darn close.
Influenced by stone rock mainstays Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, And The Circus Leaves Town plays Streetsville's Masonic Lodge this Friday. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets cost $6. They are joined on stage by the likes of Straw Man Fallacy, Dr. Calypso, Friends, blacktoptheory, Panserbjorne, progressive rockers I Spoke and Vulcan Dub Squad.
"We're sick of the music on the radio now," said singer and guitarist Carey Linton. "It's getting so stale. Audiences want something with a twist."
The twist Linton alludes to is the fuzzy guitars and low tones of stone rock. The style has progressed over the years and is far more metal influenced than its originators. The Melvins, a favourite of Kurt Cobain, and Kyuss are two more contemporary versions of the sound.
"It's classic rock infused with long solos. Psychedelic rock," said Linton.
"We're out there doing something different."
The band is rounded out by guitarist Brent Sagan, drummer Spencer Linton (identical twin of Carey) and bassist James Chernoff.
